Sometimes, I feel that it’s quite annoying that I am half Korean. The moment I spew out the fact that I am half Korean, koreaboos go apeshit with their preconceived image of what a Korean should be. What’s so special about being Korean? Are Koreans some sorta god-sent race that is here to save us all? Hell. Fucking. No.
Many Koreaboos feel the need to let others know that they “speak korean” when all they fucking know how to say is “oppa” or “unnie” or “saranghae”. I swear to god, do you Koreaboos realize how embarrassing it is to proclaim that you’re fluent in a language but those measly words are all you can say? And the fact that some Koreaboos legit want to be Korean. That’s not only degrading your own ethnicity, but also your own self worth. Be confident about where you came from and who you are. You know what pisses me off the most? When Koreaboos give themselves Korean names. There was this one girl in my high school who kept telling people “My name is Kim lee min”. First of all, if you’re not Korean or you have no Korean citizenship, you shouldn’t have some made up name. My last name is Jung and I was teased my whole childhood. They called me “junky or Jungle” all the time. Being Asian-American, we are the minority. Do not think that just because you feel you have the right to name yourself some silly made up Korean name, that it’s okay to. Many Asian-Americans get made fun of for their names, yet you are here making up names for fun. How jolly. /rolls eyes/
Koreaboos, if you are going to learn one thing, learn this: Not all Koreans act or look like they stepped out of a k-drama. That is not reality in Korea. Korea is one of the most suicidal countries out there. Their plastic surgery epidemic is rising. They have serious political strains with Japan…there are just a lot of problems you have no clue about. Stop being deluded into thinking Kpop or K-dramas dominate the country’s culture. It doesn’t. I can’t name one Korean relative of mine who doesn’t think K-dramas are foolish. Kpop is a product they sell—-and export item. Just because you think it’s popular, doesn’t mean it’s popular in Korea. I have seen some Exo fans declare that Exo is the most popular band in Korea….WRONG. Korea is still warming up to Exo, majority of them too busy wth work to even give a shit. Uhh, did you forget? There are actual adults in Korea who don’t have time to pay attention to bands?
And please, please, please, PLEASE, stop thinking Koreans are the “best” East Asians. All races are equally awesome. I cannot tell you how pissed I get when Koreaboos claim Luhan or Kris “too attractive to be Chinese. They must be Korean.” I was so ashamed to see even a few select Chinese girls saying the same thing about their country’s men. Why is it so hard to understand that there are pretty people EVERYWHERE? NOT JUST KOREA! I have been to Korea multiple times, and I have seen some ugly-ass mofos there. Not everyone from Korea is “pretty and tall and perfect”.
One time, I had this Koreaboo insist to me that Jajangmyun (or Zhanjiangmien) was Korean. I gave her a whole history lesson about how it’s from China. At the end, she gave me the stupidest answer I could have imagined. “Their sauce is sweeter, so it’s still Korean.” That’s like saying “a Chinese guy used soy sauce on his ddeokbokki, so it’s now Chinese.” Makes no goddamn sense! I was seriously wondering why the hell she was having so much pride in a country that is not even hers! She even told me tofu was Japanese and soy sauce was Korean….when any intelligent person who has taken basic world history classes know that both originated from China. I was baffled at how stupid she was. Legit.
Koreaboos, get over it. Stop trying to fetishize a culture/country. It’s not cool nor is it okay. Many Koreans absolutely detest Koreaboos. No, it’s not “flattering” that you like their “culture”. If you legit think Kpop or K-dramas are Korean “culture”, you have no right in trying to learn about Korea in the first place. Ignorance is never an okay thing.
